King Lear Quotation Activity for Acts 1, 2, 3

Each student chose four quotations in class on Monday, March 28.
Complete the following and bring it to class on Wednesday, March 30.

For each of the four quotations...
1. Identify speaker, act, scene, lines (e.g. if you chose the first line of the play: Kent, 1.1.1) You might use this website to help you find the lines.
2. Describe the context: who is present? what is the situation? What might any of this have to do with the quotation?
3. Identify images (both literal and figurative) and themes. Discuss the significance of the imagery, themes and (more generally) the quotation.
4. Make connections between the quotation and your other quotations. (And/or make other connections.) Connections might have to do with speaker, events, imagery, themes.

For Your Consideration

Jessica Hovey, a middle school teacher in Kobe, Japan, posted this on Facebook:

I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. "Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." MLK Jr.

Here is a column explaining how the Facebook posting got disseminated across the internet without the quotation marks that distinguish between what Hovey wrote and what Martin Luther King Jr. wrote. (The excerpt is from a book called Strength to Love.) Have any of you seen the quotation posted on Facebook by friends?

The quotation and its dissemination are important for two reasons. I think at this moment Hovey's post is important to consider and I think we can learn something about how inaccurate information can spread quickly on the internet.

5. Invisible Man (Prologue through chapter 11) part to the whole essay (due in the 7/19 comment box by August 2 if you did not attend session 2 or 3)
6. Invisible Man (chapter 12 through Epilogue) quotation response journal (due August 2)
7. Invisible Man Parts to Whole Web (due first day of class August 31)

8. Wide Sargasso Sea quotation response journal^ (due at or by session #4 August 16)
9. Five statements insightfully comparing and/or contrasting Invisible Man and Wide Sargasso Sea (due by Thursday, September 2)

10. Quotation response journal on something else you read this summer (due by Thursday, September 2)

^ Directions for the quotation response journal:

You are required to have at least ten (10) passages quoted from the book with corresponding responses.
Be sure the ten passages are representative of the entire book. In other words, ten passages taken only from the first few chapters or even the last few chapters will not be acceptable. As you read the book you have chosen, identify certain passages that cause you to stop and respond to what you are reading.
The goal of this assignment is to be actively engaged in the reading process and to make inferences rather than summarize.
Students should divide their paper into two columns.
